Luka Doncic Continues His MVP-Caliber Season in a 114-100 Road Win vs. the Los Angeles Lakers

Hey guys! This week for my journalism class, I was challenged to re-do a type of assignment that I have already done so far this school year. Since this is a sports’ blog, I decided to do another article on a sports-related event! Enjoy!

Luka Doncic vs Lakers

On December 1, 2019, the Dallas Mavericks (13-6) snapped the Lakers’ (17-3) 10 game win streak behind another dazzling performance by 20-year old Luka Doncic. Following an embarrassing loss to the Los Angeles Clippers, Luka bounced back with 27 points, 9 rebounds and 10 assists. The game started out with the Lakers taking an early lead and Luka struggling only making 2 of his 9 shot attempts in the first half. LeBron James had 15 points and 6 rebounds in the first half,  while Anthony Davis had 20 points, the score being 62-59 with the Lakers leading. In the third quarter, however, the Dallas Mavericks took charge. The Lakers were outscored 35-17 in a quarter that truly changed the game from there on. Luka had 16 points and five assists in the quarter that showed how good the Mavericks can be. LeBron James ended with 25 points, while Davis had 27.

After Sunday night’s loss to the Mavericks, the Lakers are searching for answers. While having a fascinating record of 17-3, they’ve played one of the easiest schedules in the league having only played five teams with winning records(more wins than losses). In games versus mediocre teams, they have played down to the competition, being down 15 points in many of those games, and only winning by a small margin. However, like every team that has had an easy schedule to start, the schedule gets rougher down the stretch.

Luka Doncic celebrating early season success

The real story of this game, is Luka Doncic. After winning Rookie of the Year averaging 21.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 6 assists a game, Luka has made an astounding leap in his sophomore season averaging 30.6 points, 9.9 rebounds, and 9.6 assists a game in his first 19 games of the season. He has already achieved many records this year that have only been achieved by the likes of Michael Jordan, LeBron James, and James Harden. At the age of 20, Luka has put up MVP-caliber performances while leading his team to the fourth best record in the Western Conference (13-6). While the beginning of an NBA season is thought of being the time when players start to warm up, Luka Doncic is already blazing through the league, and is clearly carrying the torch for the next era of NBA superstars.
